It has become a proven reality that Indian Premier League (IPL) played a very important role in modern cricket and established Indian cricket team, which we can see today. IPL produced many talented and versatile players for Indian cricket and has become a factory of talented players.
IPL is a popular and commercial brand of India where players from different countries use to come and take part in different teams. Pakistan also follow the same way to develop local and national cricket of Pakistan. For sure, it has been proved by different cricket leagues that participation of international players can play a very important role commercially for investors and locally for promotion of cricket. International players are the main element to attract the sponsors, media and spectators to the grounds.
PSL fetched world’s attention and to a large extent gained the stated objectives. Revenue boosted, new talent emerged, best and worst team combination came out – take the instance of Lahore Qalandars.
We can say it was a strategy which India used and now Pakistan is using to make cricket as a brand and as an event for investors and general audience. In beginning, Pakistan was facing security issues hence it launched Pakistan Super League (PSL) in UAE and that time it was part of strategy to hold at least one match in Pakistan.
In 2009, Pakistan gone through a big incident in which Sri-Lanka’s cricket team came under attack and faced a serious threat. That attack went as a disaster on national cricket because international cricket had been banned in Pakistan. Pakistan faced a long era of ban and struggled hard from both ends, commercially and productively as well.
Pakistan got success to hold matches in Pakistan and it was a strategy to restore cricket international cricket through different ways. Friendly countries like Sri-Lanka played a big role for restoration of cricket in Pakistan. It is also true that PSL was also one way to restore cricket in Pakistan and now after struggle of 10 years, Pakistan has totally restored the international cricket through PSL and support of friendly countries.
PSL has also become a brand on which several investors are ready to invest and also international brands have opportunity to have a big audience. Pakistan should follow the way which India used for its local cricket.
PSL is now a brand, franchises are being sold on gigantic rates and investors have now issue to invest. This time all matches will be played in Pakistan and next year it will also be here, so now Pakistan Cricket Board should think that how PSL can play a big role for local cricket and how we can produce better players.
PCB should focus on local clubs, cricket academies and also it should motivate to investors to invest on local cricket and make PSL as biggest event of the Asia. So, then they will have a big chance to get more revenue and also Pakistan will have better players and more investment opportunities.
