What is responsible for un-impeding Rape incidents in our society?

The [unfortunate] rape cases have been on upward trajectory these past years. Quoting a daily newspaper –with the most circulation in country- over 25 rape cases have been registered till now in 2019. These are the numbers only which were registered due to vibrant and ubiquitous Media, the numbers unregistered could only be imagined. Different reasons come to mind when thinking about the possible reasons behind the urge which leads to such heinous crime perpetration of which would even shame animals.

Some hold responsible our social ethos which wouldn’t allow mingling of people of opposite sex at a certain age and also wouldn’t allow girls to wear clothes of their own choice, saying ‘such barricades would instill desperation and arouse boys who now have access to objectionable material on internet. Others would put all the blame on lousy course of law which takes years to even decide a simple case, and would suggest beheading and hanging of offenders of such crimes like in KSA and Iran.

Dissemination of awareness is [a] difficult yet the only viable solution to these crimes. But our emotional and young social Media warriors – who rarely are seen to be rational- want a quick fix like hanging the criminals in such cases.  It is easy to rant on social media about fixing the most severe punishments for such crimes but difficult to have debates about ways to educate the youth.

Such reasons and situations seem bookish and theoretical when one takes stock of real life situations or ground realities to be more specific. Most of the ‘rape and kill’ cases have minor children as a victim. Pedophiles involved there are mostly of immediate family members of the victims. Listening to the rapists on Media after commitment of such crime would suggest the crime wasn’t planned or thought through: it was committed on a spur of a moment. In most of the cases involving a blood relative as offender, the case would vanish after sometime because the guardians of the victim come to terms with the perpetrator. How could the law take effect in such case? No matter how robust and ruthless law is implemented, it would be as good as a weak law when parties to the case decide to solve it outside the court.

As of the other argument like mingling of children of the opposite sex and clothing of girls, it seems to hold some water only to a certain extent. Yes, it inculcates negative feelings when boys and girls of a certain age are forbidden to even interact and can also lead to such situation where desperate person would do anything to satiate his animalistic urge. But, what about the high rate of such crimes in the countries where social ethos allow dating and hanging out of boys and girls, and where girls wear less of clothes. The rate of rape crime in those countries is also on the upward trajectory which suggests that the problem doesn’t lie with what girls wear or whether boys and girls are allowed to mingle or not.

The real problem exist with not taking the most needed and permanent solution to this crime: that is educating the young generation about ramifications of voracity of such acts. Most of the young victims don’t know about such thing while walking into the honey traps. On the same patterns, young offenders in many cases also wouldn’t know about the punishments of such crimes. Many don’t know about the havoc they wreak on families of the victims as well as to their own families.
