Last time it was year 2006, when my all-time favorite actors shared the same screen. The Departed has the honor of being a gem of a thriller by a star studded cast. Directed by none other than Martin Scorsese, The Departed tells the story of South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) who goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of a crime boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As a movieholic you don’t need any magical oil lamp to grant your wishes, when Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Dicaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin are acting in the same movie. The Departed earned approximately $292 million against $90 million budget. The Departed justified its budget, class, story, and star cast by winning Oscar for Martin Scorsese as Best Director. Mark Wahlberg who impressed with his ruthless cop character also earned nomination for an academy award for supporting actor.
After 2006, the journey of The Avengers began. Undoubtedly one of the most heroic, beloved, majestic sci-fi movie franchises, The Avengers assembled a chain of most talented actors in the world. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson and others still impress us with their breathtaking performances. The Avengers and The Departed can’t be compared as both are from different genres. Indeed these two are at the top in terms of movies with multiple world class actors.
Beside The Departed, and The Avengers I haven’t seen any remarkable movie with multiple stars. But my wait is over now. It’s 2019 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Ford v Ferrari are going to bamboozle the trends. After Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill series, Quentin Tarantino has made a film with indeed the most talented, iconic, spectacular actors of last 3 decades. It’s going to be a “Leo Brad” magic. It’s my personal point of view that highest level of Leonardo Dicaprio’s acting was not in Titanic. Similarly Brad Pitt is a much bigger actor than Mr and Mrs Smith, and Ocean Series. If you want to see the level of Leo’s acting then must see What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Wolf of Wall Street, and The Revenant. In What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, at the age of just 19, Leo told the world that a legend is coming. Wolf of the Wall Street is perhaps the most spectacular biopic of all time and I wonder that Leo didn’t get an Oscar for his acting. The Revenant gave Leo his first Oscar, and this line is enough to describe Leo’s acting in The Revenant. Similarly 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button display the level of Brad Pitt’s acting. The curious case of Benjamin received 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Pitt, and won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects. These two legends are acting in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood under the director, who is 2 times Oscar winner. That’s not enough because Mickey of Godfather, drug cartel of Scarface, and Blind Lt. Col of Scent of a women, Al Pacino will also magnify this film.
Now come to Ford v Ferrari. It’s the masterpiece of the Batman and Jason Bourne. Indeed the most versatile actors of this era. Christian Bale, who has ability of becoming psycho of Machinist, and The Batman of Christopher Nolan with in a snap of finger, will act as car racing engineer Ken Miles. Then spy of Bourne series, Will Hunting of Oscar winning Good Will Hunting movie, Matt Damon will portray the role of Carroll Hall Shelby. The film follows the story of building the Ford GT40, a new racing car with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 race in France.
In the coming decades along with master pieces like The Departed, and The Avengers, these two movies have to set standards. Expectations from multiple stars movie are more than a regular movie with a single hero. There will be an immense pressure on these two movies to satisfy people and box office. If they fail to meet the level and hype they have created, then it will be a major setback to the careers of world’s most followed actors and directors. As a movieholic I hope that they will not disappoint and like The Departed, and The Avengers they will set new standards for the movies with multiple star cast.
