In Pakistan, the rule is ‘Might is right’ and the recent viral incident involving a PTI member depicts it perfectly. The viral video shows Imran Ali Shah, PTI- MPA, slapping an elderly man repeatedly while his guards surround him.
The citizen being beaten in the middle of the road in Karachi is named Dawood Chauhan. According to reports, Dawood Chauhan tried to cross MPA’s luxury vehicle after which he was thrashed. The video of the incident was captured on mobile and was posted on social media and went viral.
Consequently, PTI served a show cause notice to Imran Shah which mentioned the unacceptable behavior shown by him and that he presents his point of version in the next 24 hours. Therefore, due to the enraged general public and PTI’s pressure, the MPA came out in the open and presented his version on twitter and later on TV.
According to the PTI lawmaker, he was driving by when he saw a man repeatedly hitting a poor man’s car and stopped him. He claimed that he asked the man to apologize to the poor man and that once people started dispersing ‘the man abused me and then pushed me’.
Dr. Shah further claimed that he had only pushed the man. However, as we can see in the video Imran Shah slapped the citizen many times. Afterwards, the PTI lawmaker in his bid to rescue his image and standing, went to the victim’s house to apologize.
Interestingly, the man identified as Dawood later in an interview clarified that he had no option but to accept his apology as in Pakistan it is almost impossible to get justice against an influential person. Dawood’s son posted a statement on Facebook questioning if his father hadn’t been friends with Firdous Naqvi, a senior PTI leader, would Imran Shah have visited and apologized?
The society is fed up of incidents like these. It is time this misuse of power is stopped. And Naya Pakistan demands action and justice, and not gimmicks. The public does not care whether if Imran Khan will wear a new sherwani at the oath-taking ceremony or not. And if Imran Khan is indeed such a simple man then he should give away his Bani gala mansion for educational purpose. As he himself stated that he would be ashamed to live in PM house and that he wanted to turn it into an educational institute. But as PM house is situated in red-zone it is not possible to do so.
The point is I have no issues whatsoever about Imran Khan residing in his Bani gala house. But if he himself makes foolish statements about practicing simplicity and then not following it himself then he is only making himself and his party look stupid.
The concern and focus should be on matters of governance and welfare of people. Imran Khan has genuine followers and support among the masses but he needs to meet the high expectations from the public and to shut the critics.
And if PTI can eradicate this issue of ‘misuse of power’ it will be a big achievement. And this incident of their lawmaker abusing his power and beating a man is a perfect opportunity to show to the citizens that Naya Pakistan indeed means business.
Lastly, the emergence and popularity of social media has been of great significance and incidents such as these not only get highlighted but create massive storm to put pressure on the accused and the authorities. So a big thanks to social media and to the people of Pakistan who are very active on social media platforms to raise their voice against injustice in the society.
