Refuting extremism from the inside

“All banned terrorist outfits extort money from innocent Muslims and massacre them.”

Faces don’t make you, ideologies do. Some grow into Ehsanullah Ehsan and others remain Liaquat Ali for they are content.

Former spokesperson for banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan surrendered to the military on April 18, 2017, nearly a decade after he pledged allegiance to terror at expense of blood.

Over a week later, the military released a confessional video of the TTP renegade.

‘My real name is Liaqat Ali. I was enrolled in college and joined banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in year 2008. I had also worked as spokesperson for TTP Mohmand Agency’s faction’, disclosed Ehsanullah.

“All banned terrorist outfits extort money from innocent Muslims and massacre them. They (terrorists) bombed schools, colleges and public places. Miscreants use social media platform to portray wrong picture of Islam in order to exploit youth of the country. I saw a lot during my nine year tenure in TTP”, stated Ehsanullah.

An extremist who was looked up to by nascent followers of wrongly portrayed Islam, refuted the picture in its entirety yesterday.

Innocent Muslims are extorted and massacred, schools and colleges are bombed, Noreen Lagharis are disenchanted with their ideologies to serve a deplorable purpose, Liaquat Ali laid it all out yesterday.

Trump’s coming to power with the elderly majority of the United States seeing Muslims as the real evil, call for Pakistani military and the 34-country alliance to bring more Liaquat Alis to the fore.

Twitter chirps

Social media warriors and commentators across the world fight for the ideology they believe in. They speak because they can. The hatred Islam has attracted should and indeed, must be countered but with more Liaquat Alis and not with hatred-tweets back at them.

Coming towards neighbour’s sponsorship of terror through covert links of RAW and NDS, it should be said that diplomatic front of a country is able to mount pressure on enemies with successes garnered by security agencies.

Kulbhushan Jadhav was detained in March 2016 and sentenced to death by a military court this year. MQM’s alleged funding by RAW and foreign agencies; surrendering of Ehsanullah Ehsan; checking cross-border movement between Pakistan and Afghanistan among other developments surfaced after one-of-its-kind Operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched.

Successes on the coercive front in war on terror strengthen the case on diplomatic front.

Separately, a journalist pointed out:

Not to counter Indian-led isolation bid against Pakistan in the world but to weaken anti-state elements as well, more Liaquat Alis are needed.

On April 18, Major General Asif Ghafoor Bajwa said that sentences in 274 terror cases were awarded by military courts so far and anti-terrorism operations were being carried out across Pakistan to eliminate residue of extremism.

He said that 622,691 weapons of different categories were seized in country-wide operations under Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad, a second large-scale operation of the military in war on terror.

Second Battle of Swat aka Operation Rah-e-Rast in May 2009, Operation Zarb-e-Azb in July 2013 and Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad in February 2017 drove Pakistan to where it is today in war on terror.

I’m contesting that Liaquat Ali could not have shunned Ehsanullah Ehsan without these operations.
