Chelsea – From top to bottom to top

Chelsea finished third in the 2013-2014 Premier League campaign, which was Jose Mourinho’s comeback season. Chelsea could have won the title but a loss against Sunderland at home, which was Mourinho’s first ever loss at Stamford Bridge, ended Chelsea’s hopes. Chelsea turned out to be a completely different team next season. Mourinho had won his second season with last 4 clubs he had managed, including Chelsea, and once again his side was unstoppable. They kept clean sheets against all top 4 sides at home and were ruthless against minnows. Chelsea went undefeated till December and there were talks of them going invincible, a feat which was only achieved by Arsenal before.

Chelsea’s unbeaten streak then ended against Newcastle United and they also lost to Tottenham Hotspur away but they came back stronger and trounced Arsenal 6-0 to show that they were the best side in London. Chelsea won the title in April, with four games left, and Mourinho won his third title with Blues. They had also won League Cup that year so people were expecting Chelsea to get even better the following year but a different Chelsea showed up next season.

They drew against Swansea City in the opening game and then things went from bad to worse. They were thrashed 3-0 by Manchester City and then started Chelsea’s worst ever season of Roman Abramovich era. They were beaten 9 times in 16 games, lost 4 games at home out of 8, whereas they had lost just 1 out of the previous 95 games under Jose Mourinho at home. Mourinho was sacked and things did not get much better even under Guus Hiddink. Chelsea finished at 10th place in 2015-2016 season and Antonio Conte was brought in. There were no big talks about the title and Conte said that he would only target a top four finish from a side which finished 10th in the previous season. But once again a different Chelsea side showed up.

Chelsea won its first three games in a row and then there was a slump. They lost to Arsenal and Liverpool but then surprised the other Premier League clubs again. They defeated Manchester City at Etihad, humiliated Manchester United 4-0 at Stamford Bridge, and won against Spurs as they had a winning streak of 13 matches. Even though they lost to Spurs, they bounced back strongly like 2014-2015 Chelsea and stayed on course for a title win. They outplayed Arsenal 3-1, as Hazard scored one of the best goals of the season by dribbling against more than half of the Arsenal side. Chelsea had lost many matches from 1-1 in the final minutes of the game in the previous season but this time they won most of the matches from the same position, which makes a team champions.

At the moment, Chelsea lead by 13 points at top of the table and once again it’s Chelsea’s title to lose. They are also in the semifinals of FA Cup and if they manage to win Premier League with few games left, they can concentrate on the oldest trophy of football and would surely be the favourites as other 3 contenders would be focusing on finishing in top 4. But Chelsea fans are already worried about the next season and hoping that this season would not be followed by a season like 2015-2016 one.
