The second edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) has entered the final phase and now there is only one match of the group stage remaining. And once again the positions of teams would be decided in the last match, hanging the fate of all teams in balance until the last ball.
Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators are once again on top two positions like the last year but both of them have same number of points. Peshawar are on top position as they have a better run rate so they will play the first qualifier against the team that finishes second, which would be decided after the last match.
Islamabad United is on third position with 8 points and they can still go on top of the table if they win against Karachi Kings in the last game. That will push Quetta Gladiators to the third position and they will then play the fourth positioned team.
The fourth position battle would be the most interesting and thrilling as Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings have same number of points with 3 wins each. Lahore Qalandars could have knocked Karachi Kings out by beating them on Saturday.
The nail-biting game was decided on the last ball as Kieron Pollard hit two sixes off last two balls to snatch the win from Qalandars. But the Lahori side still has chances of reaching the next stage but they will be praying for Islamabad United’s win in the last group stage game, and that with a good margin.
Karachi Kings will just have to win the last match by any margin to reach the next stage but Islamabad United will have to win by at least 14 runs or chase the target in 18.2 overs to make sure that Lahore Qalandars stay in the hunt for the trophy.
The match is also very important for Islamabad United because they will finish at third position by losing and could top the league by winning. That would mean Islamabad will have to win one game less in next stage so they would make every effort to win the last game.
The race for the Green cap, which is for the highest run scorer is also very close as both Babar Azam, Rilee Rossou have scored 238 runs. Dwayne Smith with 218, Kamran Akmal with 208 and Kevin Pietersen with 201 runs are not far behind.
The race to become highest wicket taker is even more interesting as Sohail Khan has 12 wickets and there are three players – Muhammad Sami, Sunil Narine and Sohail Tanvir – on the second position with 10 wickets each. And then there are Usama Mir, Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali with nine wickets each.
So let’s see what happens tonight. And till then, keep the fingers crossed because it is going down to the wire.
