The fault in our books

Who do you think is responsible for this extreme radicalisation of our youth? Why do you think we have attached the feeling of hatred to the name ‘India’? Why do we always portray Pakistan as the ‘innocent one’ and India as ‘the villain’?

The answer to all above questions and many others is that we have been studying biased books throughout our lives. Our textbooks are replete with biases and foster biasness. I am especially talking about our ‘Pakistan Studies’ books and its portrayal of partition of subcontinent. These books give us one-sided facts of the events of subcontinent’s history and therefore our views and ideologies are based on partial information.

For instance, we have always studied about the asperities and sacrifices of our primogenitors, how we were under the tyrannous charge of Hindus and how they used to carry out butchery and carnage etc. But don’t you think that ‘it takes two hands to clap’. I think we were equally involved in the struggle for freedom as they were. We were equally atrocious as they were. We were also appalling. I am not blaming the whole thing on Pakistan; nor on India for that matter. Because I am not mentally mature enough to give a viewpoint or stance on my own. I will only believe what I read and have been reading since I was in 6th grade because it is the time when Pakistan Studies is introduced to students as a separate subject.

When a child is admitted to school, his mind is an empty cup, which is gradually filled up with his course of education. And in this scenario, we are only filling the cup with a bitter fluid of detestation and loathing. And then we are complaining about the aggressive and short tempered nature of our youth. Why don’t we just educate them about the reality and let them decide on their own who should be tagged as oppressor and who should be considered the oppressed? I think it is the responsibility of our state to ensure unbiased and unprejudiced education. All I desire is that we stop filling our youth with such negativity and then expect them to be tolerable adults. We should stop infiltrating their minds. But it’s never too late. All we need is just a slight change in our textbooks and we’re good to go.

what do you want from us ? to love india ? are you suggesting we should change history ? change facts ?
    Are you mad women ?
you poor fool, you’ve been brainwashed by our enemy.
we don’t want nor expect anyone to be a “tolerable adult” when it comes to India.keep that in mind.

    let me remind you that
Kashmir is under illegal Indian occupation since 1948,
India planed and played key role in separation of east Pakistan in 1972,
and India fund/send ttp terrorists, insurgents and create many other problems for Pakistan…but we should be tolerable adults !

our problem is that we,our Gov’t and media is not aggressive enough and is very lenient unfortunately.
i recommend you to watch this BBC doc. on Partition and afterwards do tell BBC to slightly change certain parts of the documentary just because you didn’t like them.

I appreciate your hate speech. Just go through the article once and see if i have mentioned kashmir anywhere in it.

      1. ali says

is Kashmir not a major cause of rift between us ?
according to you the fault lies in our text books,to the rest of us, its Kashmir.
that is why you didn’t and i did mention Kashmir.

please stick to the relevant topic, the article is about books only, if you cannot read then tell someone else to translate it for you.
the way to said bad things to me, is exactly the definition of term “intolerable” please try to be more patient because muslims are supposed to be that way, without our sense of speech, there is no difference left between us and animals.

  3. Pakistani girl says

But in the society we live we can see easily and the hate for india is from our heart not it is nade…!!! We hate india bcz they kill muslims over cow meat and they killing kashmiris without any reason.. These things are enough. To hate india

    1. Nishat says

true, but it doesn’t justify that our books should be biased. I also hate India for what they are doing.

  4. Shah says

Thanks for the highly informative documentary, as it proved that neither Hindus nor Muslims were solely responsible for the massacres, as it says that Bihar was attacked by hindus and Bengal by muslims.

  5. ali says

This pile of rubbish is not about books only.perhaps you should hire someone to teach you how to write properly .

    it’s about
us not being tolerant (in your opinion)
us not in love with India.
and that Muslims were oppressors, equally atrocious as Hindus (absolutely rubbish claim)

There is usually only one chapter about history and all other chapters cover geography, language, governance, culture, development, economy, foreign policy what exactly is biased history ? and not based on reality ? show us real examples with evidence to support your claims.your whole argument is based on vague assumptions and statements like “don’t you think that it takes two hands to clap”

I’m going to report this propaganda and complain about your behavior to not publish user feedback. This very same article is on another site under the title “Our Books Are Our Worst Enemies”…. i find this highly offensive. The writer is barely 20 years old and speaks as if she was there at the time of partition.

  6. NS says

First pf all, Best of luck.and secondly you want proof? Go read the book Murder of history if you can read

    1. ali says

      Murder of history
      chapter 1 is a mess.chapter 2 is better organized.
The book is self contradicting, exaggerates, lies,Mislead and confuse the reader.largely irrelevant as it was published in 1985 and talks about books published 12 years prior to 1985.
      Have a look
      Examples from chapter 1
Annotated pages (141-144) from the beginning of Chapter 2 where he grouped all serious “transgressions” in different categories.
many of them are not mistakes, others not found in our books today. To declare books our worst enemies based on a 30+ years old book without verification is insanity.Be careful and watch out for the teacher who fed you guys with lies and used this 31 years old junk for justification.lastly,i urge you to read the last two pages of Pakistan studies book for (intermediate class 12 published by National Book foundation).
